Burn Butternut, Burn!
Jan. 8th, 2004 10:35 pmFor those of you who are familiar with the Omaha area (or live here and haven't heard the news yet. Where *have* you been?), the old Butternut Coffee building on 10th and Jackson is burning. It's been burning since 11:30p, Jan 7th, and it's still burning, all 10 floors of it. They have 4 water streams on it at the moment. Fire officials are expecting it to fall either tonight or tomorrow. That building, known to most as the 'Brick building with the coffee pot on top of it', has been there for 90 yrs. My entire life, it's been a landmark of sorts. It was right next to the Western Heritage Museum, which was one of my favorites as a kid, because they have the one room schoolhouse set up. It was right next to the old market, and we always drove past it when going to my Grandmother's or the zoo. It started out as a coffee plant, and more recently was being renovated into condos that were going to cost just over 125K.
Of course, it did give off a pretty orange glow at 6 this morning when I was coming home from work.
