Jun. 28th, 2008 08:07 amIn case you haven't watched the news (because it did make national news again), we were hit by a VERYVERY nasty storm last night. 80-100mph winds with hail (yes, hail flying at 80-100mph, SIDEWAYS). It lasted only 15 minutes, but it knocked out power to half the city and killed two people. I have pictures and video. The Summer Arts Festival is still on, even though a few stalls were utterly destroyed and a several artists lost a lot of work. The food stalls are GONE.
The Qwest Center, where the Olympic swim trials is going on, was damaged, people were evacuated from it yesterday, but the trials are back on today. There was a concert and fireworks at one of the parks in town too, that was cancelled and thankfully people got the hell out of there, AFTER POLICE SHOWED UP. This was AFTER the sirens had went off twice.
I also found out that the manager of our apartments, who is a friend of Di's, was home when this happened. They were in the kitchen when the wind ripped the screendoor open and SUCKED HER TWO YEAR OLD DAUGHTER OUT OF THE HOUSE. Lily is okay, she ended up in the driveway under her mom's car. She's got a black eye and some scrapes, but that's it.
My boss had a tree fall on his garage and he lost ALL the windows on the north and west sides of the house. My aunt lost all the windows on her front porch. The other aunt nearly lost the roof off her shed and they have several holes in the roof of their MG.
Okay, got the full video uploaded, which is actually two videos put together. (Gods bless Windows Movie Maker) It very, very quickly became impossible to see out the north side windows (not to mention I was worried about them breaking, so I moved to the front porch which is on the south side of the house. Yes, that is Di at the end because she had been inside keeping my cat from having a heart attack. (Illusion spazzed pretty bad, Di had to literally wrap her up and hold her still.) Learned after this that my brother, his girlfriend and his kids were on the I-80 bridge over the Missouri River when this hit.
