There was more to watch out for on Harrison Street than a construction zone Thursday morning, if you believe what you read on electronic signs.
Workers with the River City Barricade Company say someone broke into the programming box on the side of a sign at 60th and Harrison and changed the message to "Caution: Zombies Ahead."
There have been reports of similar incidents at construction zones across the country, but the workers say this is the first time they've seen it.
They say someone managed to pry their way into the programming box, likely with a crowbar. They changed the message on the sign and also changed the password so it couldn't be changed back.
The workers say the password will have to be reset before any change can be made.
Paul Britt of Omaha didn't see the sign but thought the idea was amusing. "I'd think it would be funny. Yeah, I'd get a kick out of it if I drove by and read that. Well most people around here know there's construction there. If you're from out of town you wouldn't know what's going on. I'm sure people don't think there's zombies there. I wouldn't."
Shawn Lamaak of La Vista doesn't think it's funny. "To me it's just the same as vandalism. It's just somebody messing around and scaring little kids like that. It's nonsense."
