The Earth Goat



The Earth Goat, together with his (or her) brother (or sister) Water Goat, exhibits a notoriously erratic behavior. He changes his mind ceaselessly without even knowing it. It is in his inveterate habit to act quite offhand and react in a hurricane fashion. Although capable of reasoning logically, he often bases his arguments on irrational premises. His entire existence is a constant flux between wishful thinking and upsurges of activity, between passivity and bounds of aggressiveness, between secrecy and transparency. However, he would be the first one to be surprised if his capriciousness and unpredictability were pointed out.


Whatever his age, this Goat, male or female, always gives the impression that he is incapable of striking on his own. Lacking objectivity, he easily becomes entangled in the problems at hand and habitually has to count on others to solve them. When confronted with difficulties of any kind he chooses the line of least resistance, convinced that most things will resolve themselves without his intervention or effort. Timorous, he never dares to claim his due, let alone to fight for it.


Conscious that his own survival depends largely on other people, the Earth Goat does his best to secure their sympathy and cooperation. His instinct for self-preservation prompts him to agree to all sorts of concessions and even compromises. He feels all the more encouraged in this direction as he has an essentially amoral view of life. Lying, for instance, is not considered by him as something morally reprehensible, but only as an innocent, justifiable way to avoid trouble or obtain favors.
