First off, even if I said it already, Happy Birthday Stacy.

Now, onto the good news. I have books, I have ID card, I have class schedule, and thanks to the nifty school bookstore, I will have my laptop by the end of the week.

Dell Inspiron 6400

Intel Core Duo processor T2300 (2MB cache/1.66GHz/667MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows XP Professional SP2
15 1/2 inch wide screen XGA Display
512MB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 DIMM
Combo/DVD+RW Drives 24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
40 GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
Dell Wireless 1390 802.11b/g Mini Card

So, my question is, for those who read this, how hard would it be add more RAM to this model? What about the video card?

Easy- I could do it myself.

I could not, however, do it without voiding the warranty. You'll have to take the beast to an authorized Dell service center and get Dell authorized memory put in.
Not terribly difficult- but more expensive.

What [livejournal.com profile] colubra said about the RAM.

Videocards in laptops are a twitchy issue - there's been a couple of companies trying to create an upgradable video card spec for laptops, but none of them have really worked too well. It tends to be, well, A Bit Interesting due to wiring and cooling issues. (I have a Dell XPS2, with a portable GeForce card with 256MB of video RAM, and I refuse to actually use the thing on my lap. I like a lack of burns.) It's hard to upgrade the video, in short

The hard drive should be pretty easily upgradable, though, with the caveat given above. And if you haven't and can at this point, I really do recommend the best warrantee you can get - I have the Platinum 4-year.

(Which means that the one-pixel vertical line that's been appearing on my screen will get fixed tomorrow when someone comes to my house and replaces the LCD and the video card, just to make sure. And I pay nothing.)
