I know some professors like to make the lives of their students difficult.

But really.

Assigning a book that can't be bought in the school bookstore, any bookstore in 25 miles, can't be bought NEW ON AMAZON?

That's going a little far.

This is the book in question.


Also, it would be nice if they wouldn't cancel classes the FRIDAY BEFORE THEY START. Kinda hard to get a new class and then get the books when the bookstore is closed on weekends.

And, of course, that means that the library has exactly one copy of it and there will always be a waiting list for it.

So, how exactly does the professor expect you to be able to get it? And is the professor the main author on the book?

Heh, is he cited extensively in the footnotes? I had a professor (who specialized in 19th and 20th century Asia, as a matter of fact) who assigned this godawful long, dry, expensive reading list. As it turned out he was cited, quoted, or thanked in the prefaces of about half of them.

Nope. Nothing at all to do with this book. Apparently he just likes the book.

Thankfully I found it on Google books, it appears that the first five two chapters are intact. That should get me through until I can buy the damn thing from somewhere.

Heh. I had a class once where it took 3 months for everyone's copy of the assigned textbook to arrive on order through the student bookstore. Apparently the professors had forgotten to warn them in advance and they suddenly had 100 people wanting the same book and no copies at all.
